Smiths Falls is open for business as never before. At 5:00pm yesterday, Mayor Shawn Pankow cut ribbon, opening the town’s doors to a brand new, expanded and bright Visitor Centre. This was not a moment too soon for the booming town.

A service counter on the North side of the venue is ready to receive all visitors whatever their orientation : Downtown Business Association, Economic Development, Tourism, Local Immigration Partnership and Chamber of Commerce inquiries.

Chris Saumure was present and beaming about Guy Saumure & Sons Construction’s hand in this resplendent renovation. The photographic, full-wall mural of Beckwith Street in the 1890s is a strong statement on the town’s deep and enduring roots.

Town Council think and act out-of-the-box, conducting their council meeting within the Visitor Centre–just this once. Smart P.R. For a short moment they left us for a “cone of silence,”  Councillor Brennan who led the meeting qualified. This earned him a good laugh.

“I think it’s fantastic that the Mayor will be in our space signalling that the town is open for business and ready to welcome visitors and residents to our community,” says Jennifer Miller, the town’s newly minted Manager Economic Development and Tourism.

Miller delivered her first speech with “five minutes notice.” This executive has a long history leading Big Brothers and Big Sisters in Lanark. She represents another great milestone in the Town’s growth.
