O Canada! Seen, heard and felt around the world

By MAGGIE M, Editor, Wedgee-in-Chief, theWedge.LIVE

I was strangely moved. I sang. I raised my fist in glory. My eyes moistened. I am an avowed nationalist, patriot, deeply Canadian.

We the little second largest nation in the world–the one who says “sorry” a lot–is standing strong and proud.

Toronto’s Raptors vs. California’s Warriors have two more games to go. Game 6, June 13th will be at fever pitch. Ahum, fever dunk.

The Raptors took three out of five games. It’s close. But that’s what makes it so electrifying.

It seems it’s not just about the game. It’s about us via the world. Almost everyone is increasingly emotionally invested in this showdown. People who have never watched the NBAs are watching now.

The Raptors enabled our patriotism and a sizeable audience that made its way to the NBA finals. And got our blood coursing through our Canadian veins.

WE THE NORTH. The meme is viral. The t-shirts are making someone rich.

OK. I’m in. I AM NORTH too.

Drake, Eugene Levy, our local own, Fiona McKean (Opinicon) and Tobi Lutke (Shopify) were there. What a great heartfelt message to the world and healing for broken hearts.

Our immense, unique flag unfurled. Let’s be honest. Our flag stands out among all others. Not boasting but speaking as a graphic designer.

Here are the words to our Canadian anthem (English and French), passionately sung by all Canadians at the games. Join in with ABC’s excellent video capture below.

My last words : GO RAPTORS ! With glowing hearts We see thee rise!

Official English:

O Canada!
Our home and native land!
True patriot love in all thy sons’ command
With glowing hearts we see thee rise,
The true north strong and free!
From far and wide,
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.
God keep our land glorious and free!
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.

Official French:

O Canada, terre de nos aieux,
Ton front est ceint de fleurons glorieux.
Car ton bras sait porter l’épée,
Il sait porter la croix.
Ton histoire est une épopée
Des plus brillants exploits.
Et ta valeur, de foi trempée,
Protégera nos foyers et nos droits.
Protégera nos foyers et nos droits.
